The good times marched into town at the third annual ArtiGras Carnival which took place at Barrel 118 on Saturday, February 25 2023. This over-the-top Mardi Gras-themed event was created as a celebration and fundraiser for two local non-profit arts organizations, The Artisans Village and The Plaza Arts Center. With widespread love for local artisans of all disciplines, this event provided an opportunity to bring the community together to showcase the talent among us, increase awareness of the artistic outlets and raise funds for continued program expansion.

Chair of the planning committee, Sara Tomson-Hooper, led the team of board members and volunteers to pull together all the sparkling design, decor, fundraising, and festivities for over 200 guests. The planning committee was comprised of the arts organization board members and volunteers. “The support we receive from our volunteers and sponsors is amazing. It is wonderful to see all the support for the arts in this community.”

Creole Cuisine from Kersey Catering featured jambalaya, Cajun roasted pork loin, red beans & rice, crab cakes, brussels sprouts and much more. Guests were met outside by one half of “Gravity,” who was twirling flaming torches while the other half of the duo exhibited incredible contortions inside on the stage. Gravity continued their entertainment throughout the night with stilt walking, juggling and feats of balance and strength.

Guests enjoyed New Orleans signature cocktails and danced the night away to Bogey and the Viceroy. Special entertainment included Mark the Magic Man, caricature artists, a silent auction, and a raffle. The stunning floral design was the beautiful work of Murali Thirumal and another group of hands-on volunteers. All of this was made possible by some generous sponsors and volunteers who donated many hours of time and planning.

Tickets for this much anticipated event were sold out once again this year. The money raised will go to support future programming and operational cost of both organizations. If you were not able to attend this event, there are many opportunities to support these amazing arts organizations. The Artisans Village offers different art classes each month plus art special exhibits and receptions featuring beautiful artwork from local artisans.
