ABOUT PAPPY VAN WINKLE

“There’s Pappy Van Winkle, then there’s everything else.”

The bourbon everyone wants but rarely can get.

In the Van Winkle family, the bourbon business has always been a family affair. Great grandfather Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle founded Louisville’s Stitzel-Weller Distillery on Derby Day in 1935. His son and grandson followed him into the business.

Pappy & Company: Today, three Grand Daughters (identical triplets), are embarking on their careers, celebrating their family’s bourbon heritage at every opportunity—continuing the family traditions at every party, tailgate, horse race, holiday get-together, and family dinner. Pappy Van Winkle and the Story of Old Fitzgerald by Sally Van Winkle Campbell is a book detailing the history of the Van Winkle family and the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, focusing on the legendary “Pappy” Van Winkle and the creation of Old Fitzgerald bourbon. Written by Pappy’s granddaughter, it combines personal anecdotes, family history, and business insights, covering Prohibition, the company’s growth, and the eventual sale of the distillery, making it a key read for bourbon enthusiasts and history buffs.

Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented Cigars: Flying Pig (Box of 12)

One of the most desired cigars in our portfolio, The Flying Pig, is presented in a 3 15/16 x 60 ring gauge vitola. A favorite amongst cigar enthusiasts worldwide, its unique shape is based on a photograph of an 1895 cigar salesman’s case. Due to its size and signature pigtail, it is one of the most complicated cigars to manufacture, requiring specialized training.

The Barrel Fermented Flying Pig features the same blend as our other Barrel Fermented cigars, so for tasting notes, think hickory, charcoal, and fresh earth. You can expect a smoother smoking experience with the Flying Pig due to the larger ring gauge. While shorter in length, it is a long smoking experience. Enthusiasts can easily expect this cigar to last an hour and a half.

For those new to the collection, the Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented Cigars are made with a combination of the finest Kentucky, Mexican, and Indonesian tobacco. They are hand-rolled in small batches at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua, and are unlike anything else on the market thanks to our unique barrel fermentation process. Throughout the 12-18 month fermentation process, bundles of Kentucky fire-cured tobacco are pressed in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels, imparting a unique flavor profile and aroma. Pairs well with spicier spirits such as rye.

The custom set includes an authentic Pappy Van Winkle Whiskey Barrel Wood Piece, a mini culinary torch emblazoned with the Pappy & Company logo, and two 8-ounce Pappy & Company rocks glasses. Pro tip: Chill your glasses before giving them a smoke bath (the cold helps the flavor stick) by carefully lighting the stave piece with the torch and covering the smoldering wood with the glass, which is customized to fit the included stave piece. Pour in the cocktail of your choice.

Bourbon Barrel Stave Smoking Chunks

When used in a grill or smoker, these quality oak chunks create a sophisticated cocktail of smoky flavor for mouth-watering steaks, burgers, poultry, fish and veggies. Oak is the most versatile and popular smoking wood. Having spent years as a barrel holding Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, this premium wood will enhance your food with our signature Pappy flavor and sweet oak smoke.

Use for shorter cook times or as a fragrant finisher. For longer cook times, combine with other smoking woods to stabilize the heat. Try the wood chunks dry, or soak them in bourbon, juice or water to create steam, if desired. Whichever way you use them, it’s going to be delicious.

Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned Mix

Generally, cocktail mixes are something we have avoided—with good reason. But then right around the time the craft cocktail culture began taking off in earnest, we met Joe and MariElena Raya, longtime bartenders turned entrepreneurs who had begun creating their own line of mixologist-level cocktail mixes called Bittermilk, and we were forced to reconsider that long-held position.

Their No. 1 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned Mix, in particular, was an immediate hit with the Van Winkle clan. And like Bittermilk’s original mix, the exclusive Pappy & Company version is made with simple quality, well-balanced ingredients (bittering agents like gentian root and cinchona bark along with burnt sugar, spices, and a bit of orange peel), but ours is aged in retired Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels, creating a distinct flavor profile unique to Pappy & Company. Fair warning: This mix is super concentrated, so a little bit goes a long way.

Made with single-origin Guatemalan whole beans aged in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels, this one-of-a-kind blend with a mellow but completely unique flavor profile will appeal to coffee nerds and bourbon aficionados alike. We serve ours over ice with a splash of Pappy & Company pure maple syrup and a dash of cream. It’s also pretty darn tasty poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if we do say so ourselves.
